It's All About That Work-Life Balance

Dolly Parton was so right when she said "Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life"

How many of you can relate to this? I know I can but it is certainly easier said than done.

Being ambitious can make us driven to carve out a successful career for ourselves. The question is when does this drive become detrimental to our health and well-being?

Do you think that you get the balance right between work and your personal life? It can be different for all of us as we all have different priorities and interests.

The issue lies when we don't feel balanced. It's when work is all too consuming, having a never ending workload that just won't bugger off!! It's when we find ourselves so consumed by work, that we constantly feel overwhelmed.

When stress is ever present and we just don't feel like we have enough time away from work to recharge or simply enjoy ourselves, lets face it it's not a good place to be in.

Stressors that are unattended to and built-up over time can have a detrimental effect on both our physical and mental well-being. I should know as I've experienced first hand the consequences of not getting the balance right. This is where my sheer need to succeed in my career took precedence over my own health and boy did I feel it, with anxiety following me around as if it were my shadow.

So how do we get the balance right? With pressures of modern day life, it is admittedly increasingly harder to achieve. Positively its not impossible though, we can swap feeling tired and worn out and replace it with more clarity, feeling balanced and healthy.

It all starts with us and our mindset. It is about being kinder to ourselves and allowing ourselves a break.

Let's face it we can't fit everything in all at once. It is okay to allow ourselves some time out for ourselves to do something just for us.

So let's stop beating ourselves up every time we do take a break and embrace it instead. You do deserve it, so now it's just a matter of believing that you do. Once we shift our mindsets to believing that we do it is amazing how quickly we can find time to take time out.

What to do?

Now don't worry we are not talking days out of the office here, rather simply allowing yourself a breather each day. 

Below I list some very simple ways you can achieve this:

  1. This could be taking a walk outside at lunch time
  2. Sitting down and listening to music
  3. Reading a chapter of your favourite book
  4. Taking part in some form of exercise
  5. Even simpler just sitting still and focusing on your breathing for a few minutes
  6. Schedule in at least 10 minutes of you time a day 

You name it our choices are endless, we just need to stop feeling guilty when we do something for us. It's important to also remember to do what feels right for you.

Give it a go over the next week and reap the benefits. Remember you deserve a little you time regardless of how ambitious you are, so go ahead and take a well earned break.
